linux os boot
#1
Question
Hello guys,
I have ventoy USB prepared as per instructions in MBR and with secure boot. I can boot to windows and linux iso fine on my old dell xps L502X laptop. But on my gaming system I can boot to windows iso, however the linux iso does not boot, if i force text during boot, either it gets stuck or does not display anything. One error i have noticed is xCHI failed/usb disconnect and sometimes "Begin: running /scripts/nfs-premount . . . done." followed by nothing. System just hangs.
Have tried ubuntu 20, linuxmint17 and 20, kali linux, zorin OS lite.

Spec:
Ryzen 3600, nvidia 1660, msi b450 MB in both UEFI and CSM mode. Secure boot disabled.

Any guidance is much appreciated.

You can write the linux ISO directly to the USB by some tools(e.g. rufus) to make a comparison test.
This will make sure that whether this problem only occurs when you boot these iso files by Ventoy.

Other possible choices:
  1. UNetBootin (https://unetbootin.github.io/).
  2. Universal USB Installer (https://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-...-as-1-2-3/).
  3. Rufus (https://rufus.ie/)
  4. Etcher (https://www.balena.io/etcher/)

Hey thanks.

Yes the problem seems to be my desktop. The linux live usb also had the same issue.
After googling found that some kernel have issue with usb power and stuff. but i could not seem to find a break to make it work in this desktop. Just updated to the latest available bios, still same issues. Pointer if any would be very helpful.

It is always usb device descripter failed read/64, error -100 or error -71 and unable to enumerate usb device, which actually turns off the pendrive with the OS/ventoy

Try all USB ports and try a different USB drive.
Try connecting USB drive using a USB 2 extension cable.
What is USB drive? How is it connected?
It looks like a Linux USB driver issue with your hardware.
